One of my favorite things to look forward to in the winter is dreaming over seed catalogs. They stack up on my footstool only to topple to the floor at least 5 times a day! With bemoaning from unnamed family members!
I don’t know about you, but I’ve never ever ever gotten seed catalogs before January. At least that’s what my aging memory tells me…it could be wrong.
Maybe you have.
But here it is a week before Thanksgiving and I’ve already gotten TWO seed catalogs. I don’t know now what I’ll be reading in January, since I’m already reading and rereading and circling and wishin and hopin.
I know that last year seed companies were hit with a deluge of orders and they were ill prepared for the surge in home gardening. I think of course it’s in part to the amount of blogging and gardening websites. I also think that CSA’s (Community Supported Ag) have taken off. It’s my dream to have a CSA some day, but it’s also my dream to grow all the food we need for a years time. And in my book, you can’t do both! Not if you’re me.
I’ve been keeping a “Next Year” list and I add to it often……right now I have Dried Beans, Dried Corn, January King Cabbage, Parsnips (I’ve discovered that I love love love them!), Naked Seed Pumpkins, Hakurei Turnips, and I’m sure that my list will grow.
My plan to put the chickens in the area where I want to expand my garden is working. Those girls are so busy scratching in the leaves, manure, straw, etc, they’ve forgotten about the other job that they are here for……laying eggs! HELLO? Girls you really need to multi-task better!
